Ray Mears Caricature
Based in Hastings, survival legend Ray Mears is a true East Sussex icon. As a self-described “Woodman,” it is fitting he lives in England’s most wooded county. I recently attended his Born to Go Wild tour, where he demonstrated the primal art of fire-making—reminding us that this skill uniquely separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom.
Ray’s approach through Woodlore focuses on harmony with nature. In my caricature of him, I captured this spirit by drawing Ray on a log with his binoculars, right in his element. Whether he’s bushcrafting in Australia or exploring Sussex, Ray reminds us to ditch the screens, embrace the “creative mayhem” of life, and reconnect with the wild.
