Ray Mears is local to East Sussex living near Hastings. Ray Mears has said in interviews that he cannot live without being near trees and East Sussex is the county with the most trees in which seem fitting. On Desert Island Discs Ray first described himself as a Woodman, and I think he is now best known for his TV Series in Bush-craft ‘World of Survival’ and ‘Extreme Survival’. I went to listen to Ray Mears live show ‘Born to go Wild’ in October 2017, and I am so pleased I did. Ray demonstrated the different ways to make fire live on stage and by the end of the show I had a list of tools to acquire to have a go myself. Ray pointed out that we are the only creatures who can create fire which is one of several things that separates us from other creatures. The second part of the show was his recent trip ‘Bush crafting’ in Australia and this admiration for the Aboriginals with their local knowledge. It was a fascinating talk to and he has a different approach to Bear Gryll’s as a survivalist. Ray Mears company Woodlore is now the oldest in the world of Bush-craft. Before that no one was doing it and Woodlore runs courses and expeditions which I would love to go on one day. I think it is critical to make the experience of Nature important and it is so good to ditch social media and digital technology once in a while.
